Life and death are inseparable in a mega city like Mumbai , As known by Muhamad Saharafat Hussain aged 36 years. He started fishing for missing corpses in 2001 and still continues to do so without getting anything in return even after he lost his job as driver during the pandemic . Hussain aka Kallu is offering his service to the Mumbai police, He has risked his life all through the pandemic. As ‘Kallu’ is known to fish dead bodies from places like drains and rivers which have tough accessibility for fire brigade and cops . He wants to keep doing this work to help those families who have lost their loved one’s despite the amount of time it takes.
Sometimes he gets just the body parts like hands or legs of someone, sometimes it’s just bones. There have been instances where the corpses were covered with worms. On seeing such things, many questions arise – related to the causes of death. Kallu can sometimes figure out the causes by examining the marks or injury on the body. But then everything is left to the expertise of the forensic department. Kallu says that he is immune to night mares as he does it objectively without letting it get to his mind. He is not afraid of death and says that a person can die any moment, even a hiccup can kill someone. He lives a regular life in a small house with his family and doesn’t let his job interfere with his conduct as a family person. For hours (?) he will sit on a provisional boat in the creek of Mithi river with bamboo sticks and look out for dead bodies. Of men/women or kids. By doing this work, kallu says that he gives relief to the family members of the dead people and helps both of them find peace. In a city where he came as a migrant, he has helped many people see there loved one’s for the last time before their bodies depart.
